About this test

The 2000s were the last decade in which the album mattered more than the single, and the first in which digital distribution started pulling it all apart. The two movements collided: CD sales peaked early in the decade, then the iPod, launched in 2001, and download stores shifted the unit of consumption from the record to the isolated track.

One telling episode: in 2007 Radiohead put In Rainbows online and let buyers set their own price, zero included. The experiment, heavily discussed at the time, showed that an audience would pay without being forced to — and it became the standard argument for anyone defending new sales models. Spotify, launched in Sweden in 2008, would settle the question another way entirely.

The best tool for learning a musical decade is the liner notes, or their online equivalent: the credits. Spot the producers who keep reappearing — Timbaland, Mark Ronson, Danger Mouse — and you suddenly understand why very different artists share the same sonic signature. It works far better than memorising dates one by one.
